What to consider

Chimney stacks are exposed to rain, wind and temperature changes. Repairs may involve weathered mortar joints, damaged masonry or roof junctions, but the required work depends on the condition and stability of the stack.

01

Chimney repointing

Deteriorated joints may need suitable preparation and replacement mortar. The mortar should be compatible with the existing masonry; covering defective joints with a thin surface layer is not the same as proper repointing.

02

Masonry and stability

Cracked or loose masonry requires assessment before cosmetic repair. Where structural concerns are identified, further specialist advice may be needed to establish a safe scope of work.

03

Separate masonry from leadwork defects

Water near a chimney can originate from the stack, flashing or nearby coverings. These details should be considered together so that repointing is not assumed to cure every chimney-area leak.
