What to consider

Roof replacement is worth considering when coverings or underlying layers have deteriorated across a substantial area. It is different from a new installation: the existing roof must first be assessed, removed where required and its exposed condition reviewed.

01

Assessing the existing construction

The covering is only one part of a roof. When old materials are removed, the condition of exposed battens and accessible timber can affect the work required. Unexpected defects should be discussed before the scope changes.

02

Selecting replacement materials

New coverings need to suit the roof’s pitch and supporting structure. Changes in covering weight or roof build-up may require further design advice; the existing structure should not be assumed suitable for every material.

03

Weathering and ventilation

A replacement provides an opportunity to review ridges, valleys, leadwork, insulation interfaces and ventilation. Ask for a quotation that identifies the included layers and details, not just the visible covering.
